皆さん、こんにちは。お元気でお過ごしのことと思います。さて今回からは、私が今までに出演した映画作品について、思い出話を交えながら順を追ってご紹介してゆきたいと思っています。楽しんでいただければ嬉しいです。
私が生まれてはじめて映画スタジオに足を踏み入れたのは、1947年のことでした。
何もかもが桁外れで、まるで夢を見ているような体験でした。当時、私はハリウッドに程近いロングビーチという港町の中学校へ通っていました。そして毎週日曜日には、米国聖公会の少年聖歌隊に所属していました。
国内で最も優れた聖歌隊のひとつとして名高いところで，私はそこに５年間在籍していました。そしてその聖歌隊は，長年にわたり多くの映画作品の歌を手がけ，時には、実際に映画のシーンに出演する事もありました。そう，ある日の事，聖歌隊長が私たちにこう発表したのです。
「MGMの『愛の調べ』という映画のコンサートシーンに出演することになった」と。
その映画の主役は，なんとキャサリン・ヘプバーンだということでした。私はもう興奮してしまって、信じられない気持ちでした。そしてMGMの撮影所にはじめて足を踏み入れたときの事は今でもはっきり覚えています。大掛かりなセットが組まれたスタジオがいくつもあり、MGM映画のほとんどがそこで撮影されていました。まるで私にとっては魔法の国、夢と想像の館でした。
その魔法の国では、多くのMGMスターに会う事ができました。とてもエレガントで圧倒的な存在感のあるキャサリン・ヘプバーン、当時はまだ１５歳だったエリザベス・テーラー、そしてフランク・シナトラの姿も。
MGMは、子役スターが撮影の合間にも勉強ができるようにと、学校を併設している事でも有名でした。そして私たちは皆学生でしたので，撮影期間には１日３時間、その学校で宿題をしなければなりませんでした。
ある日、その学校が子役の子どもたちの為にハロウィン・パーティを開き、私たちも招かれたのです。そこで、一人の男の子が勇気を振り絞って，なんとエリザベス・テーラーにダンスの申し込みをしたのです。彼女はとても大人しい感じの女の子でしたが，親切にも彼の申し込みを受けてくれたのです。彼が、私たち皆の羨望の的となったことは言うまでもない事でしょう。
私たち聖歌隊は，フルオーケストラの壮大なコンサートシーンで、大人のコーラス隊と共に２週間にわたる撮影に参加しました。臨場感をだすために、何百人という観客役のエキストラが、劇場と化したスタジオに集められました。
キャサリン・ヘプバーンの夫役を演じたポール・ヘンリードがオーケストラを指揮するシーンでのことです。出演者の緊張は最高潮に達していました。
劇中で….ポールが耐えかねて指揮をやめてしまいます。オーケストラも演奏を中止し，観客はざわめきはじめます。するとキャサリン・ヘプバーンが静かにステージに上がり，夫に近寄ると、彼の威厳が失わないよう手をさしのべるのです。ポール・ヘンリードとキャサリン・ヘプバーン。ふたりの名優の演技を目のあたりにできたことは、とても貴重な体験でした。
MGMでの夢のような２週間があっという間に過ぎ、撮影が終わってしまうのが残念でしかたありませんでした。そしてその時の体験が，私のその後の進路を決定づけたと思います。俳優。そうは思ったものの，いったいどのようにしたらなれるのか皆目見当がつきませんでしたが、その夢に向かって私は歩き出したのです。
その感動的な体験にはじまり，その後の人生でずっと映画界に関わってこられたことは、とても幸せだと思っています。そして実は、今しがたも撮影所で仕事をすませてきたばかりなのです。『愛の調べ』、それは１２歳の少年にとってのターニングポイント。俳優になりたいという夢を抱かせてくれた作品。『愛の調べ』との出会い、それは私にとって至極貴重なものであり、幸運なものでもあったのです。
